The story of a common man who's been struggling along year after year and who's finally been pushed over the edge. Burt Dawes in now 40 years old and is faced with a crisis in his life: a new road is being built and will remove his worksite as well as them home he's lived in for a long time. Bart, unable to cope with this goes over the edge and falls into a pit of destruction... both in his personality and the personal revenge against the system that has done this to him. It's sort of amusing and entertaining at times but it's hard to feel alot of sympathy for the guy. Although the pressure of uprooting ones familiar surroundings is never a good thing, the book leaves one with the impression that they guy is nothing but a loser.

In any case, it's still worth a read because I'm sure everyone can relate to his situations and actions, and in that sense, we do cheer for him.
